Telford is located on the River Severn, in the county of Shropshire, approximately 155 miles north-west of London and 16 miles east of Shrewsbury. The town was named after Civil Engineer Thomas Telford who was an engineer and who designed many of its buildings, bridges and tunnels. As a new town in the 1960s and 1970s Telford was created from the merger of other smaller notably towns such as Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley and Dawley, and in 1973 Telford Shopping Centre was opened.
