Cannock was a small rural community until mid to late 19th century when mining heavily increased and many industries came into the area. In 1967 the last colliery closed in the town and the last remaining colliery in the Cannock Chase area to close was Littleton in 1993.  There are now no heavy industry in the area.  Cannock Chase has a German war cemetery containing 4,885 German military dead from both the first and second world wars.  It is managed by the Commonwealth Ware Graves Commission
